Role summary

Merck's Chemical Engineering R&D department seeks an Associate Specialist to support startup and operations of a new potent drug substance manufacturing facility in Rahway, NJ. The role involves equipment testing, facility commissioning, operational readiness, and pilot-scale batch processing across multiple drug modalities.

Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or Pharmaceutical Sciences plus one year relevant experience
Associate degree in Process Technology or related field plus six years pharmaceutical/chemical manufacturing experience
High School Diploma/GED plus eight years experience in pharmaceutical or chemical processing
Rotating 8-hour shifts (1st/2nd shift, alternating weekly) with onsite presence five days per week
Strong mechanical aptitude and independent problem-solving capabilities
Technical writing proficiency and competency with Microsoft Office and data visualization software
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with collaborative mindset

What you'll be doing

Contribute to equipment design, material testing, system commissioning and facility qualification during construction phase
Support operational readiness program by developing procedures, documentation and training materials
Execute pilot-scale batch processing including raw material sampling, solution preparation and chemical reactions
Perform wet chemistry operations and dry powder processing for multi-modality drug substances
Collaborate with development engineers, chemists and compliance teams to ensure quality and safe clinical supply delivery
