Role summary
Merck seeks a Principal Scientist to lead drug discovery initiatives for animal health, identifying and advancing novel molecular entities and technologies from early concept through proof-of-concept phase. The role requires directing cross-functional research programs while collaborating with internal teams and external partners.
What they're looking for
- PhD and/or DVM/VMD with board certification in pharmacology
- Minimum 8 years industry or pharmaceutical research in drug discovery and preclinical in vivo pharmacology
- Advanced knowledge of pharmacology, disease mechanisms, and preclinical models
- Expertise in oncology, diabetes, respiratory/immunology, cardiology, pain/inflammation, or reproduction
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements including GLP, GCP, and GMP
- Ability to manage multiple projects, budgets, contracts, and timelines independently
- Strong communication skills and experience preparing executive presentations and patent applications
What you'll be doing
- Identify new molecular entities and technologies for animal health from internal labs and external partners
- Lead research programs from ideation through early-stage research and proof-of-concept development
- Interface with researchers, senior management, and external collaborators across matrix organization
- Secure resources for research work across medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and toxicology
- Manage multiple concurrent projects including budgets and timelines
