Role summary

Amgen seeks a Senior RNA Chemist to advance mRNA therapeutic platform technologies in Thousand Oaks, California. The role focuses on mRNA design, synthesis, purification, and characterization to enable next-generation medicine discovery. The chemist will lead experimental efforts, develop platform technologies including chemical modifications and sequence optimization, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve RNA stability and manufacturability.

  • PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field; or PharmD/MD with postdoc; or Master's with 3+ years relevant experience; or Bachelor's with 5+ years relevant experience
  • Expertise in RNA chemistry, oligonucleotide chemistry, or nucleic acid therapeutics
  • Hands-on experience with in vitro transcription, RNA purification, and analytical characterization
  • Proficiency with analytical methods including HPLC, FPLC, LC-MS, gel electrophoresis, and capillary electrophoresis
  • Knowledge of modified nucleotides, capping technologies, and RNA structure-function relationships
  • Experience designing and executing experiments independently with strong troubleshooting abilities
  • Demonstrated scientific communication through publications, patents, or technology advancement

What you'll be doing

  • Design and implement high-throughput strategies for modular mRNA assembly with therapeutic applications
  • Develop mRNA platform technologies including chemical modifications, capping, and sequence optimization
  • Lead efforts to improve RNA quality, purity, stability, and biological activity through experimentation
  • Develop and apply purification strategies for mRNA using FPLC and related chromatography methods
  • Utilize analytical characterization techniques to evaluate impact of modifications on mRNA performance and developability
