Role summary

Merck's Biologics Process Research & Development organization seeks an Associate Principal Scientist to lead upstream cell culture process development for biotherapeutics. What they're looking for

  • Ph.D. with 4+ years experience, or Master's with 8+ years, or Bachelor's with 12+ years in chemical/bioengineering
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, fed-batch processes, and recombinant protein production
  • Deep knowledge of CHO cell biology, metabolism, and large-scale bioreactor engineering principles
  • Proficiency with statistical methods, design of experiments, and analysis software such as JMP or SIMCA
  • Proven track record of upstream process development with strong publication and presentation record
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to work in matrixed team environments

What you'll be doing

  • Lead or participate in upstream process development for first-in-human and commercial cell culture processes
  • Execute process development, characterization, and regulatory documentation to support PPQs and BLAs
  • Partner across discovery, analytics, and manufacturing to develop integrated process solutions with quality by design
  • Drive process improvement initiatives to increase efficiency and reduce manufacturing costs
  • Collaborate with external partners and vendors on adoption of new process technologies and maintain scientific presence through publications and patents
