Role summary
Merck's Chemical Engineering Research & Development department seeks a senior scientist to conduct hands-on process development and scale-up work for active pharmaceutical ingredients. The role involves independent research, experimental design, and cross-functional collaboration across laboratory to commercial manufacturing scales.
What they're looking for
- BS/MS in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering plus 5+ years relevant process development experience, or PhD in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering
- Demonstrated experience in lab-based research and process development within chemical engineering
- Experience scaling processes from laboratory to pilot plant or production scale
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to collaborate across teams
- Solid organizational, interpersonal, and time management capabilities
- Preferred: Direct pharmaceutical drug substance processing experience and cGMP/GDocP familiarity
- Preferred: Statistical experimental design, process modeling, organic synthesis, or PAT experience
What you'll be doing
- Design, plan, and execute advanced experiments to achieve process and technology development goals
- Conduct hands-on process development and scale-up work across multiple manufacturing scales
- Support pilot plant operations and interface with cross-functional colleagues and customers
- Ensure compliance with cGMP standards, participate in risk assessments and deviation investigations
- Manage process development activities at external suppliers as needed
