Role summary

Merck seeks a Principal Scientist to lead biomarker strategy development across oncology and hematology clinical programs. The role involves designing translational and clinical biomarker approaches that inform key development decisions, from early through late-stage studies, in partnership with cross-functional teams.

  • Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent advanced degree in oncology, hematology, translational medicine, or biomarker science
  • Significant experience developing and executing translational or clinical biomarker strategies in oncology or hematology
  • Strong expertise in cancer biology, hematologic malignancies, or translational oncology
  • Experience with biomarker modalities such as NGS, ctDNA, MRD, flow cytometry, or gene-expression profiling
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional work in matrixed environments and influence without direct authority
  • Strong analytical skills and working knowledge of biostatistics, bioinformatics, and quantitative sciences
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to translate complex findings into actionable recommendations

What you'll be doing

  • Develop and lead integrated biomarker strategies across oncology and hematology programs with cross-functional teams
  • Translate disease biology and therapeutic mechanisms into translational hypotheses and fit-for-purpose biomarker approaches
  • Define how biomarkers inform key development questions including patient selection, dose selection, and resistance mechanisms
  • Lead interpretation of biomarker and clinical datasets and provide strategic input to program-level decision-making
  • Mentor biomarker scientists and support publications, scientific presentations, and external collaborations
