Role summary

Abbott seeks a Principal Data Engineer to serve as a senior technical leader for enterprise data engineering initiatives. The role owns cross-domain architecture, data standards, and complex technical delivery across Databricks-based platforms while mentoring engineers and driving operational excellence.

Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or Engineering
Expert-level software development design with Spark on Databricks, Python, Scala, and SQL
Experience designing ETL/ELT pipelines, batch and event-driven patterns, and data modeling solutions
Knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS, S3, SQC), Delta Lake, Parquet, Avro, and GitLab CI/CD
Demonstrated ability to lead through influence across multiple teams and communicate technical decisions to executives
Experience with REST API development, BI tools (Tableau), and Agile development methodologies
Preferred: Databricks, Kafka, change data capture, semantic layers, and metrics layer design at enterprise scale

What you'll be doing

Own technical outcomes of cross-domain initiatives from design through production and lifecycle support
Define, steward, and evolve enterprise data engineering standards, reference architectures, and data contracts
Lead hands-on technical work including prototyping, code review, and production problem-solving across domains
Conduct enterprise design reviews, mentor Staff and Senior Engineers, and escalate technical risks and dependencies
Evaluate architecture tradeoffs and design solutions handling protected health information meeting HIPAA and regulatory requirements
