Role summary
Merck seeks a Director of AI and Cybersecurity Legal to provide strategic legal counsel on artificial intelligence deployment, machine learning governance, and cybersecurity risk management across the enterprise. The role reports to the Chief Privacy and Digital Trust Officer and partners with the CISO to navigate regulatory compliance in a highly regulated pharmaceutical environment.
What they're looking for
- J.D. from accredited law school with active U.S. state bar membership
- Minimum 10 years legal experience, at least 5 in cybersecurity, technology, or AI law
- Deep knowledge of HIPAA, GDPR, NIS2, SEC disclosure rules, and breach notification frameworks
- Extensive experience managing cybersecurity incident response from legal perspective
- Experience advising on AI governance, responsible AI principles, and technology transactions
- Proven counseling on AI systems including risk assessment, transparency, and lifecycle governance
- CIPP/E/US/CIPM, AIGP, or similar AI certification preferred
What you'll be doing
- Provide strategic legal counsel on AI and ML system design, development, procurement, and deployment
- Advise on AI governance frameworks, risk assessment, and incident reporting obligations
- Monitor and interpret evolving global AI regulations including EU AI Act and FDA guidance
- Serve as primary legal advisor to CISO on cybersecurity incident response and breach notifications
- Support cross-functional collaboration on data governance, M&A transactions, and cybersecurity integration
