About field & technical service roles

Technical service is the function that keeps installed equipment running: commissioning a new analyser in a hospital laboratory, troubleshooting a sequencer under a service contract, or restoring a surgical system to spec. The work is overwhelmingly territory-based — postings name a metro or region rather than an office, because the role travels to the customer — and it splits between two quite different employer types. Analytical and diagnostic instrument makers hire for laboratory platforms such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, haematology and molecular systems; medical device manufacturers hire for equipment used in theatre and at the bedside. Field application specialists sit alongside these roles, focused on getting a customer's method working rather than on repair. Postings commonly ask for an electronics, mechatronics or biomedical engineering background, and a clean driving licence appears more often here than in any other life-science function.
