Role summary
Illumina seeks a Senior Compute Hardware Engineer in San Diego to advance research and development initiatives. This role focuses on designing and optimizing hardware systems that support the company's genomic sequencing platforms and computational infrastructure.

- 5+ years designing embedded/edge compute platforms with x86 CPUs, DDR/LPDDR memory, PCIe
- Edge networking hardware experience: Ethernet PHYs/switches, 10GbE, routing fundamentals
- Strong Linux expertise: device drivers, device tree, networking stack, debugging tools
- Bootloader and firmware knowledge: BIOS, U-Boot, UEFI, secure boot, TPM/TEE
- PCB/PCA design proficiency: high-speed signal integrity, power delivery, thermal design
- Board bring-up, DVT, V&V documentation, and cross-stack root cause analysis experience
What you'll be doing
- Define hardware requirements and specifications for compute subsystems based on workload and environmental constraints
- Evaluate and validate compute components, memory technologies, networking solutions, and vendor offerings
- Implement networking subsystems for edge deployment including wired Ethernet at multiple speeds
- Debug hardware and firmware issues across kernel, drivers, device tree, and bootloaders; perform root cause analysis
- Lead board bring-up activities and contribute to DVT plans covering signal integrity, thermal, power, and EMI/EMC testing
