Role summary
Johnson & Johnson seeks a Senior Principal Clinical Engineer to design end-to-end surgical workflows for orthopaedic procedures. The role translates clinical, operational, and user needs into integrated procedural requirements that guide product development across implants, instruments, digital solutions, and services.
What they're looking for
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, biomedical engineering, life sciences, clinical discipline, or healthcare administration; advanced degree preferred
- Minimum 8 years experience in medical device, orthopaedics, surgical innovation, or clinical workflow design
- Proficiency with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Figma, Miro, or Polarion; 3D visualization and CAD experience a plus
- Strong communication, facilitation, and stakeholder alignment skills in matrixed environments
- Ability to frame ambiguous problems and convert insights into structured development priorities
- Familiarity with medical device development, design controls, risk management, and regulated product development
- Competency in visual storytelling, industrial design, workflow mapping, and human-centered design methodology
What you'll be doing
- Design integrated end-to-end surgical workflows spanning preoperative planning, intraoperative execution, and postoperative follow-up
- Translate clinical, operational, economic, and usability needs into procedural requirements and design inputs
- Map current and future-state workflows to identify unmet needs, adoption barriers, and differentiation opportunities
- Partner with R&D, clinical, regulatory, and commercial teams to align workflow priorities and integrated procedural requirements
- Evaluate concepts for usability, clinical relevance, adoption risk, and end-user value to guide business and technical tradeoffs
