Role summary
QuidelOrtho seeks a Senior Database Design Engineer for its R&D Instrument Platforms organization in Rochester, NY (hybrid). The role focuses on designing and maintaining relational database architectures for Linux-based medical devices, ensuring performance, regulatory compliance, and long-term reliability in safety-critical systems.

- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline
- Minimum 5 years experience (or 3 years with master's degree) in database design and optimization
- Expertise in relational schema design, query optimization, and data-access layer architecture
- Experience with on-device or embedded databases in deployed systems
- Knowledge of data evolution strategies including migrations and backward compatibility
- Experience in regulated or safety-critical environments, preferably medical devices
- Working knowledge of C++ or similar programming language for code collaboration
What you'll be doing
- Serve as database architecture owner for PostgreSQL instances embedded in Linux-based medical devices
- Design and maintain relational schemas, indexes, views, and constraints balancing performance and regulatory traceability
- Lead query optimization and performance tuning through execution plan analysis and capacity planning
- Define database versioning, migration, and backward-compatibility standards for regulated fielded systems
- Collaborate with system architects, developers, and teams to establish stable database access patterns and design standards
