Role summary
Amgen seeks a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to design and deploy enterprise-scale AI/ML and generative AI solutions across cloud and on-premises environments. This senior individual-contributor role combines technical leadership with hands-on engineering to establish ML standards, build production systems, and mentor teams in a regulated biotech context.
What they're looking for
- 10–12+ years building production technology; 3–5 years hands-on AI/ML experience
- Deep expertise in ML algorithms, deep learning, LLMs, RAG, and modern GenAI tooling
- Proficiency in Python, Java, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Proven ability to select, integrate and scale AI SaaS/PaaS and custom ML services
- Strong stakeholder management and technical leadership across engineering and business teams
- Experience with MLOps, model evaluation, drift detection, and production monitoring
What you'll be doing
- Own enterprise AI/ML architecture, engineering standards, APIs and reusable patterns across environments
- Build end-to-end ML pipelines and production AI applications integrating models with UIs and workflows
- Establish observability, safe deployment patterns, SLOs and incident management for AI systems
- Architect LLM/RAG solutions with prompt management, safety guardrails and optimized inference
- Lead architecture reviews, mentor engineers and translate business needs into technical roadmaps
