Role summary

Merck seeks a scientific leader to direct discovery research in obesity and metabolic diseases within the Cardiometabolic Disease Department in South San Francisco. The role combines research program leadership, team management, and cross-functional collaboration to advance novel therapeutics from target identification through preclinical development.

What they're looking for

  • Ph.D., M.D., or Ph.D./M.D. in endocrinology, metabolism, physiology, pharmacology, or related discipline
  • Minimum 8 years experience in obesity, diabetes, MASH, or related therapeutic areas
  • Demonstrated scientific innovation and leadership of research programs in basic or translational research
  • Deep expertise in metabolic disease biology, human genetics, biomarker science, and preclinical/clinical data integration
  • Proven experience leading scientific teams in matrix environments with cross-functional influence
  • People leadership experience including team management, coaching, mentorship, and talent development
  • Pharmacology experience with in vitro and in vivo study design and interpretation highly desired

What you'll be doing

  • Lead obesity and metabolic disease discovery programs aligned with department strategy from target identification through preclinical candidate nomination
  • Provide scientific leadership and partner across chemistry, pharmacology, safety, and development functions to advance programs through milestones
  • Identify and advance novel therapeutic opportunities by integrating human genetics, clinical research, and competitive landscape insights
  • Build and lead high-performing scientific team fostering innovation, rigor, collaboration, and continuous talent development
  • Represent team through publications, presentations, and cross-functional scientific forums contributing to cardiometabolic disease strategy
