Role summary
Merck seeks an Associate Principal Scientist to develop and apply mechanistic models for downstream biologics purification processes. - Ability to communicate model credibility, limitations, and actionable insights to cross-functional teams
What you'll be doing
- Build, calibrate, and validate mechanistic chromatography models for capture, polishing, and viral clearance steps
- Design and execute parameter estimation studies with DSP scientists to generate calibration datasets and identify model parameters
- Apply calibrated models to guide resin selection, gradient strategy, cycle design, robustness assessments, and scale-up decisions
- Extend mechanistic modeling to adjacent unit operations including viral inactivation, ultrafiltration/diafiltration, and depth filtration
- Mentor junior scientists on the Process Modeling & Analytics team; establish standards for model development and validation across the portfolio
