Role summary

Merck seeks an Associate Principal Scientist to develop and apply mechanistic models for downstream biologics purification processes. The role focuses on chromatography and unit operations modeling to guide process decisions across the drug development pipeline, with emphasis on technical leadership and mentorship.

What they're looking for

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related field with 3+ years industrial/pharmaceutical experience
  • Deep expertise in preparative chromatography, transport phenomena, and separation science fundamentals
  • Hands-on experience building and validating mechanistic models using CADET, GoSilico, or equivalent platforms
  • Proficiency in parameter estimation, isotherm fitting, and uncertainty quantification for chromatography
  • Demonstrated track record applying models to real process decisions in resin selection, gradient design, or scale-up
  • Scientific leadership and mentorship experience; ability to grow modeling capability in junior scientists
  • Ability to communicate model credibility, limitations, and actionable insights to cross-functional teams

What you'll be doing

  • Build, calibrate, and validate mechanistic chromatography models for capture, polishing, and viral clearance steps
  • Design and execute parameter estimation studies with DSP scientists to generate calibration datasets and identify model parameters
  • Apply calibrated models to guide resin selection, gradient strategy, cycle design, robustness assessments, and scale-up decisions
  • Extend mechanistic modeling to adjacent unit operations including viral inactivation, ultrafiltration/diafiltration, and depth filtration
  • Mentor junior scientists on the Process Modeling & Analytics team; establish standards for model development and validation across the portfolio
