Role summary
Merck seeks an Associate Director of AI/ML Engineering to design and deploy scalable machine learning tools and pipelines that accelerate drug discovery. This role leads development of reusable software components within a cross-functional team focused on target and biomarker identification in the Data, AI, and Genome Sciences function.
What they're looking for
- PhD in computer science, engineering, or related STEM field with 4+ years post-graduate experience; or Master's with 7+ years; or Bachelor's with 11+ years
- Proficiency in Python, PyTorch, AWS, MLFlow, Docker, GitHub, and GitHub Actions CI/CD
- Experience building, deploying, and scaling transformer-based foundation models and representation learning pipelines
- Full software development lifecycle experience with Python packages and Docker images using DevSecOps practices
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with ability to work independently and lead projects
- Interest in life sciences applications and agentic AI systems for scientific discovery
What you'll be doing
- Lead design, development, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of reusable AI/ML software components and workflows
- Collaborate across matrix organization to identify research questions, define data requirements, and develop AI/ML solutions
- Provide technical support and enablement to AI/ML researchers and data scientists
- Monitor emerging AI/ML advancements and propose innovative approaches aligned with industry standards
