Role summary
Merck's Protein Sciences, Biochemistry and Biophysics group seeks a biophysics intern for a 10-12 week paid position starting June 2027 in Rahway, NJ. The intern will support drug discovery research by applying biophysical and biochemical techniques to characterize protein-ligand interactions.
What they're looking for
- Pursuing BS/BA or Master's/Ph.D. in related field with research experience in drug discovery
- Strong academic background in biophysics, biochemistry, and biology with minimum 3.0 GPA preferred
- Hands-on laboratory experience in protein biochemistry, enzymology, biophysics, or molecular biology
- Completed at least two years toward BS/BA or one year toward Master's/Ph.D. by Summer 2027
- Currently enrolled in academic program and continuing education for at least one semester after internship
- Available full-time for 10-12 weeks during June-August 2027
- Experience with biophysical characterization techniques such as ITC, SPR, or thermal shift assays highly preferred
What you'll be doing
- Conduct biophysical experiments to study ligand-therapeutic target interactions and structural effects
- Maintain accurate electronic notebook records and follow safe laboratory practices
- Present research data and interpretations to team of scientists
- Attend departmental and team meetings to understand pharmaceutical drug development processes
